Event Title Intelligent Disobedience: Doing Right When What You’re Told to Do Is Wrong by Ira Chaleff

Intelligent Disobedience looks at the family, educational and organizational systems designed to instill a sense of obedience rather than a sense of accountability. From the moment we first set foot in school we are taught that teachers must be obeyed and resisting authority has negative consequences. Then how can we, as adults working in organizations, intelligently disobey rules that are harmful to the organization when being compliant is so ingrained in us? And how do you do it? This book, Intelligent Disobedience: Doing Right When What You’re Told to Do Is Wrong looks at the way guide dogs are taught to intelligently disobey and how we can apply these lessons when following orders does more harm than good.

Facilitator:  Kari Uman, President, Uman Resource Associates

Kari is a certified leadership coach, consultant/facilitator, and trainer. In her capacity as leadership coach, Kari specializes in working with women leaders and those recently promoted to leadership positions to help them explore the myths and beliefs that are undermining their effectiveness; increase their awareness of self-limiting behaviors and attitudes; and create a more positive personal and professional presence.

Kari is also an experienced consultant and facilitator working with groups undergoing difficult communications to help them get beyond their differences and achieve results. Recently, she facilitated numerous labor-management forums within a federal agency with a history of contentious relationships to agree upon actions that increased their Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS) scores.

As a seasoned trainer, Kari has designed, developed, and/or conducted training across a wide range of topics for leaders and employees in federal agencies, universities, non-profit institutions, corporations, and agencies within the Intelligence Community. Topics include Leadership Development; Coaching Skills for Senior Intelligence Analysts; Managing Transitions; Women in Leadership; Career Management; Performance Management; Developing SMART Objectives; Team-Building; Facilitating Effective Meetings; Creating and Maintaining a Diverse Workforce; and Providing Feedback.

Kari holds a BA in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.Ed. from the University of Maine-Orono, and Certificates in Organization Development and Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University.
