Topic: Non-Violent Communication (NVC):  A Framework for Navigating Conflict and Discovering Alignment

Description:  It is hard to escape conflict, whether it is internally struggling with decisions or priorities, in interactions with others, or supporting others through conflict.

Conflict does not exist in a vacuum and is accompanied by beliefs, thoughts, and feelings. How we deal with them determines outcomes. Non-Violent Communication is a set of principles that allows us to go deeper and discover the stakes and possible solutions. It is used in all kinds of settings – in corporations, mediations, personal relationships, and prisons.

The framework is simple. The practice is hard. We will be sharing the NVC framework and offering some activities to help you acquire a taste of its potential.

We will:

  • Explore the 4 components of the Non-Violent Communication (NVC) framework
  • Practice differentiating feelings from thoughts and needs from strategies
  • Practice deconstructing the complexity of a conflict (Bring a conflict, intra- or interpersonal, to work on.)

You will leave with:

  • More questions and curiosity about NVC!
  • A new way to think about win-win outcomes
  • Skills to help navigate conflict

Presenters:  Anna Seaman & Laurie McPherson

Anna is a coach and mediator who works with both individuals and organizations.

In her capacity as a coach, she helps to overcome resistance to change, to make qualitative improvements and to develop new areas of qualitative management.

In her role as a mediator, Anna primarily conducts privately-contracted and court-ordered mediations for business and civil disputes. Her mediation style relies on a neutral and non-biased method to resolve conflicts utilizing efficient nonviolent communication.  Among other factors, her method takes into account cultural differences, prejudices and stereotypes.

Anna conducts mediations on behalf of the Lewiatan Mediation Center, which is a Polish organization that provides mediation support to businesses in Poland.  Anna also works with support groups for single mothers and patchwork families by conducting mediations that facilitate the means of communication and understanding between troubled youths and their parents, teachers and peers and also assist young people to discover their true potential and how to exploit it through creative solutions. 

Prior to her freelance work as a coach and mediator, Anna had a successful career working in international corporations to include BNP – Dresdner Bank and Bank of America. Among her many accomplishments, she developed quality management systems and created quality measurement standards for new processes and services. 

Laurie’s passion is helping clients increase awareness, mastery and process clarity in order to reach their goals through individual and team coaching, project management and change management. Laurie has been leading and developing teams since she started taking groups of total strangers out into the wilderness and coaching them into high-performing teams on expedition. She continues to facilitate leadership, professional and team development programs in the outdoors for organizations such as Brown Advisory, The Leadership Baltimore, St. Mary's Seminary, The SEED School, JP Morgan, Harvard Kennedy School Center for Public Leadership, MIT and the Boston University Dental School.

She organizes and facilitates community-building and personal development workshops for inmates of Maryland prisons with the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) and is on the board of AVP-Maryland. She is also a moderator for Better Angels, a national non-profit launched after the 2016 presidential election that brings people from opposite poles of the political spectrum to have constructive dialog.

Mark has been an OD consultant and executive coach for more than 20 years.  He enjoys seeing his clients and their organizations take steps to change, and when they are successful it gives him great pleasure.  He earned his MS in OD from the American University/NTL Institute and MA and BA degrees in Sociology from Rutgers University.  He is an International Coach Federation, Professional Certified Coach (PCC). 

Cancellation Policy: Registrants should contact Mark if they need to cancel.  Due to the room size, registrations will be limited so please contact Mark soonest if you register but are then unable to attend so others can register and attend instead.

Additional Notes:  A $5.00 per person contribution is requested to help pay for rental of the room.
