Program Description:  Business leaders recognize maintaining high employee engagement is a critical factor in maintaining high customer satisfaction, high organizational productivity, and low turnover. Maintaining employee engagement and productivity can be difficult, especially as organizations are faced with constantly changing and evolving to meet their missions and goals. How can organizations effectively manage change while maintaining effectiveness?

The answer is rooted in the need to understand the employees who add complexity to the dynamics in an organization. Change management professionals will recognize that understanding the individual employees who collectively constitute the organization is a massive challenge.

Using the Attachment Theory as a basis, we will explore and identify employees’ behavioral characteristics and potential areas for appropriately integrating their characteristics into strategies for managing change. We will describe the symptomatic behaviors expected to emerge in employees during organization change. We will share results from a comprehensive case study to support the significant contribution of Attachment Theory to the organizational change process and its potential value in mitigating the reasons for the high failure rate associated with organizational change initiatives.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending in this session, participants will:

1. Identify the instinctual behavioral response of individual employees anticipating and implementing organizational change

2. Introduce tools to support accurate identification of this behavioral response

3. Discuss Management Concepts Case Study to include integration of Proactive Change Strategy based on the Change Diagnostic Index© (CDI) results and draw implications for own client work


Dr. Victoria M Grady is currently an Assistant Professor Management/Organizational Behavior in the School of Business at George Mason University. Her research focuses on the behavioral implications (e.g., decreased performance, productivity and profitability) of organizations introducing and implementing organizational change—with specific focus on organizational culture, structure and overall effectiveness. She continues to build on her original research and actively integrates theoretical concepts with practical application in the field of organizational science and management.

Her consulting practice includes federal government institutions, non-profit organizations, higher education, health related institutions and management consulting firms. Current work will extend the scope of her consulting practice into the fields of secondary education, family businesses, and other private sector companies. She is co-author of The Pivot Point: Success in Organizational Change, Morgan-James Publishing, 2013. Dr. Shelley Kirkpatrick is the Director of Assessment Services for Management Concepts. She leads all assessment and training evaluation design, development, and implementation initiatives. Her work focuses on helping her clients collect data to make informed human capital decisions and effectively manage workforce improvement initiatives.

She is an organizational psychologist with more than 20 years of experience developing individual and organizational assessments for the federal government. A former professor at Carnegie Mellon University and The American University, Dr. Kirkpatrick has authored more than 35 articles on effective vision statements, leadership, motivation, and workforce assessment. She is the founder and CEO of Visiontelligence and regular guest speaker in Masters level classes at UMBC and George Mason University.

She holds a Ph.D. in organizational behavior and human resource management from the Smith School of Business, University of Maryland at College Park, and a B.S. in psychology from Bowling Green State University. She is Past President of the International Society for Performance Improvement’s Potomac Chapter. She is a Master (4th degree blackbelt) in Taekwondo, and has two sons and three dogs.
