Topic: Intervening as a Third Party: Dilemmas, Ethics, and Challenges
The field of Conflict Resolution (CR) is a vibrant and synergistic complement to Organization Development (OD) and International Development (ID), and there are many parallels in theory, technique, and ethical issues. What are the dilemmas related to intervening as a third party to support sustainability, in all its dimensions? Join us for an interactive workshop that will explore challenges & opportunities of third party roles and implications for practice from a conflict resolution perspective in organizational settings. We will also look at connections between organizational change and the broad social change we see unfolding in the Middle East and elsewhere. We are fortunate to have Dr. Alma AbdulHadi - Jadallah, an expert in both CR and OD with a broad international background. Together we will explore issues related to neutrality, conflict resolution and ethics.
You are welcome to bring your own dinner to this extended SIG meeting. Pending interest from participants there is an option to order pizza, and often the Galley Café at 1625 Mass Avenue is usually open until 7 pm.
Dr. Alma AbdulHadi - Jadallah is President and Managing Director of Kommon Denominator, Inc. (www.kommondenominator.com). She advised and worked on strategic projects related to conflict prevention and mitigation, training and education, and capacity building on the national and international levels.
As President and Managing Director of Kommon Denominator, Inc. she has developed innovative solutions and provided services to a number of Fortune 500 companies, government and not for profit organizations. She has designed and delivered highly successful small and large-scale interventions in corporate, community and international settings. She is a skilled facilitator and is a Virginia Court Certified mediator and is the recipient of several business awards.
Dr. AbdulHadi-Jadallah earned her Ph.D. from the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University. Her dissertation research titled “Reflections on Practice: The Impact of 9/11 on Conflict Resolvers” focused on the impact of a critical event – 9/11 - on the practice of conflict resolvers. She teaches graduate level courses on cross cultural mediation, conflict resolution practice and protracted conflicts in lead academic institutions. She is currently adjunct faculty at the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University, and the Summer Peace Institute at Eastern Mennonite University. She has also taught courses at American University School of International Service / International Peace and Conflict Resolution Program, Georgetown University School of Government / M.A. Program in Conflict Resolution, and the European Peace University. She is affiliate faculty at the Women’s Center at George Mason University, and Visiting Scholar at the Center for Global Peace at American University. She has participated in a number of global conferences on Conflict Resolution, International Women’s Leadership Development, and has been a speaker and participant at various national and international forums. She designed, directed and facilitated numerous dialogues on issues pertaining to gender, the Arab Israeli conflict and US foreign policy.
Dr. AbdulHadi-Jadallah serves her community through active board participation. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University, a member of the Board of Reference at Eastern Mennonite University, Peace Building Academy in Lebanon, and member of Board of Directors, Institute for Victims of Trauma, McLean, Virginia and an advisory Board member for Northern Virginia Mediation Services. SIG Description: The OD/ICD SIG is a forum for collective learning and exchange among professionals who, in their own work, support development and positive change through collaborative partnerships in the arenas of Organization Development (OD), International Development (ID), and Community Development (CD). The SIG is a multi-directional conversation among participants with diverse worldviews, theories of practice, and partnerships; and a common desire to create positive, sustainable change through trusting, transparent, accountable, and powerful collaborations and organizations. Participants are aware of the challenges and opportunities inherent in issues facing the world (e.g., material poverty, violent conflict, climate change, social injustice, and more).
The SIG is a multi-directional conversation between diverse participants, and draws on presenters from within and without the participant base, prioritizing presentations with experiential components. Because participants lead busy lives, the participant base will be different in each meeting, creating a dynamic and evolving community.
Who would benefit from attending: Practitioners, change agents, leaders, social entrepreneurs, policy analysts, grassroots activists, and partners in the arenas of International Development, Organization Development, and Community Development. These may include representatives of any sector (e.g., government, international institutions, philanthropy, civil society, academe, corporations, social entrepreneurs, etc.).
