CBODN 'In The Know' Book Discussion

Topic: Overcoming the Should Syndrome – A Case Study of Michelle Obama

Description: This session will discuss Michelle Obama’s life and career through the lens of the Should Syndrome, a condition where we make choices based on what we they think we are supposed to do or should do rather than what we want. Should Syndrome sufferers tend to hold themselves back and aren’t able to realize their full potential.

In her recent autobiography, Becoming, Obama reveals how she often felt that she wasn’t “good enough.” She recounts her challenges in deciding to leave a lucrative job at a prestigious law firm to pursue a career that more closely aligned with her passions and skills. She also discusses her reluctance to be a politician’s wife and how she navigated through the significant challenges of being the first African American First Family, while trying to stay true to herself, protect her daughters, and define her role. Using The Should Syndrome as a reference, we will explore Obama’s “Shoulds,” how they influenced her choices, and how she was able to break free from them. We will also discuss how both books can help you help your clients realize their full potential and become exceptional leaders.
