Topic: Changing Demographics and New Organizational Realities: The Imperative to Develop Racially and Ethnically Diverse Leadership Teams

Facilitator: Darryl A. Simon (click here for bio)

Program Description:
Despite decades of executive development research, the study of factors affecting the executive development and career advancement of racial and ethnic minorities is relatively limited and fairly recent. Although progress has been made in recent years, minority executives continue to be significantly underrepresented in most organizations, and research suggests that this directly affects racial and ethnic diversity throughout these organizations. Compounding this underrepresentation’s impact on organizations is the dramatic demographic shift presently occurring in American society. Currently, racial and ethnic minorities comprise 40% of all Americans under the age of 25 years old and 45% under the age of 10 years old. If current trends hold, demographers estimate that within a few decades, the United States will be a multi-cultural society where no single racial group will be dominant. Given this emerging reality, organizations must act now in accelerating the development of racially and ethnically diverse leadership talent in order to grow and be sustainable in the future. This presentation explores current research, trends, best strategies and practices on minority executive development, success and failure in organizations, and discusses implications for participants facing similar challenges. Social, behavioral, and organizational findings and their impact on minority executives are also discussed. Attendees will gain new insight and understanding into education, experience and environmental influences; become familiar with minority executive career success and derailment factors; gain additional insight into enabling and disabling organizational cultures; and learn the essentials of building and sustaining successful management diversity strategies.
