Lewinian Social Science and Racism

Kurt Lewin did groundbreaking training-action-research (as he put it) on what he called “minority relationships” (meaning imbalances of power). His methods demonstrated the power of group dynamics, local action, inclusion of all who are willing to be included, and how to change inaccurate beliefs such as prejudice. His methods worked, and there is no good reason we can’t apply them in the present. That is the thesis of Gilmore Crosby’s new book, Diversity without Dogma. Gilmore will lead this dialogue using the framework that emerged as he has applied Lewinian social science to understanding and addressing racism and other forms of prejudice.

At the end of the training, participants will:

• Have a practical understanding of Lewinian social science and its implications for facilitating any type of change.

• Be able to adapt and apply Crosby’s framework for DEI education and action.

• Derive implications from Lewin regarding how to lead training that intentionally explores and impacts beliefs.

• Be better equipped to manage and avoid the pitfalls of dogma.

• Have an integrated theory to guide action.

BIO:  Gilmore Crosby

Gilmore has been a Social Scientist and Organization Development (OD) practitioner since 1984. His mission is to better the world by spreading Kurt Lewin’s methods. Crosby guides us in understanding and applying Lewin’s universal theory of social science, including leadership, group dynamics, the social construction of reality, minority relations, re-education, and field theory. These concepts form a systemic approach that can be used by hourly workers, community organizers, and PhDs alike. Mr. Crosby’s OD career follows in the footsteps of his father’s, which began in 1953, and yet he remains on the experimental edge, delivering virtual T-groups and more. He is the author of six books, with the most recent being Diversity without Dogma: A Collaborative Approach to DEI learning and Action. Mr. Crosby is a husband, a father, and a grandfather. His clear thinking and strong track record of measurable results keep him in demand as a teacher, consultant, and a speaker.
