Topic: How to Help Leaders and Organizations Get Unstuck Using Hersey & Blanchard’s Situational Leadership Model

Facilitator: John Oyhenart

Program:

What is Situational Leadership?

Situational Leadership is based on the belief that to be effective, leaders must be flexible and adjust their leadership styles to fit both the development level of the person they are leading and the task the person is assigned to do.  The effective situational leader is a keen observer, practices high presence, and constantly adjusts the level of direction and support they give each employee to get maximum results.  The four leadership styles are Directing, Coaching, Supporting, and Delegating.

Why it is important?

When working with organizations and leaders, OD practitioners often hear about pain around issues such as poor communication, team misalignment, leader/employee mistrust, and “micro-management”.  Probing deeper, we find a number of factors that could be contributing to this pain, including such things as mismatched leader/employee expectations, lack of training, leader inexperience, poor listening behaviors, or “assumptive” behavior.

What will you get out of this session?

By learning the fundamentals of Situational Leadership and hearing real examples of how and where it is used, the new OD practitioner will have another tool to help internal and external clients build greater awareness around the leadership behaviors that are catalyzing or inhibiting exceptional performance in their organizations.  In addition to understanding the simple principles of the model, you will learn how the model is applied through brief case studies and small group discussion.
